Getting to the root of your pain

A very important part of your pain management is knowing and understanding the cause of the physical pain. Once we determine the cause of your pain, we can identify the safest, most effective ways to prevent, eliminate, or relieve it. Your pain management physician may conduct a thorough physical exam to help determine the source of your pain. It may be necessary to run diagnostic tests to accomplish this. Below is a partial list of commonly used diagnostic tests your physician may prescribe.

X-ray: The Phelps Radiology Department is designated a “Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence” by the American College of Radiology. There are many locations where patients can undergo diagnostic X-ray procedures at Phelps, including in the main hospital and at satellite locations in Croton-on-Hudson and Dobbs Ferry.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): An imaging technology that uses magnetic fields to create cross-sectional images of the body. The Phelps MRI Center, located on the hospital campus, features a 1.5 Tesla imaging system.

Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan: CT scans, also called CAT scans, assist in diagnosis by providing a series of X-rays that are compiled together to give cross-sectional images of the body. Phelps Hospital’s CT scanners include the GE LightSpeed Ultra 16 and VCT 64 slice, which can scan up to 64 slices in less than one second.

Ultrasonography: Sound waves of different frequencies are used to create images of the body. Ultrasonography is utilized in the Pain Center to provide real-time imaging during certain therapeutic procedures. Diagnostic ultrasonography is available in various locations on the hospital campus and in the community.

Electromyography (EMG): A procedure performed and interpreted by certain specialist physicians that uses electrodes to diagnose the health of muscles and nerves.

Discography: An injection done into the spinal disc under X-ray guidance that provides imaging of the disc and information about whether the disc is contributing to a patient’s pain.

Myelogram: A procedure in which contrast dye is injected under X-ray guidance to look for problems within the spinal canal, including the spinal cord and nerve roots.

State of the art treatments bring you relief

Every pain condition is as different as every patient. Our rich variety of treatment options and therapies allows us to chart a highly individualized course to your relief. Your team of pain specialists is highly skilled and highly experienced in providing the most advanced cutting-edge procedures and techniques to treat pain.

  • Epidural Steroids Injections: Injection of steroids under X-ray guidance into the epidural space of the spine. The objective is to reduce inflammation around nerves and disc.
  • Joint Injections: An injection of steroids/local anesthetic into a joint to reduce inflammation or viscosupplementation injection to restore lubrication around an arthritic joint. This can be done by our physicians at the Pain Center under ultrasound guidance to optimize the success of the injection.
  • Peripheral Nerve Block: Injection around a nerve that is transmitting pain. The goal is to numb with local anesthetic. Providers may inject steroids as well. This is often done under ultrasound guidance to improve accuracy and safety of the injection.
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy: Exercise, tissue manipulation, aquatic therapy (on-site at Phelps), and other methods are employed to improve and restore functional mechanics of the body.
  • Medication Management: To reduce the intensity of pain, a variety of medication options may be employed.
  • Radiofrequency Denervation: Procedure that identifies small nerves that cause pain and then treats these nerves to quiet the painful signals.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulation: A procedure using electrical impulses that provide patients with a different sensation that can hide the unpleasant sensation of pain.
  • Trigger Point Injections: Injection of local anesthetic with/without steroids to relieve pain caused by myofascial tightness/spasm.
  • Vertebral Augmentation: A minimally invasive procedure done under X-ray guidance using bone cement to stabilize a fractured vertebra and reduce a patient’s pain.
