When you or a loved one are having a stroke, every second counts
When it comes to stroke, timing and expertise are everything. The sooner you receive a diagnosis and treatment, the greater your chances for recovery.
And, as research shows, receiving treatment at a designated Stroke Center reduces your risk of complications and improves your long-term outcomes.
These are just some reasons for choosing the Stroke Center at Phelps Hospital. Officially designated as a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health, we prioritize every patient who arrives with signs of stroke, and provide immediate testing, diagnosis, and treatment.
In response to a suspected stroke, our team of experts acts fast. Within minutes, you will undergo a full assessment by world-class neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians, radiologists and other specialists, who will rush you to CT/MRI imaging, and then develop an individualized, evidence-based treatment plan. After beginning treatment, they will closely monitor you around the clock for neurological changes.

Saving time reduces the risk of stroke-related disability, which is why we use Telestroke. This revolutionary technology allows our off-site neurologists to evaluate you remotely—at any hour, day or night, 365 days a year—and determine in real time if you qualify for a “clot-busting” drug or other fast-acting therapies.
Having consistently achieved quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with clot-buster tPA, the only FDA-approved drug treatment approved for stroke, Phelps’ Stroke Center has earned AHA/ASA Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus status. Every year since 2009, the Phelps Stoke Center has received the Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award—the American Heart and American Stroke Associations’ highest level of recognition—for consistently providing timely, aggressive, and quality stroke care.
