What are prostate and urological cancers?
The Northwell Health Cancer Institute at Phelps provides comprehensive care for prostate cancer and various genitourinary (jeh-nih-toh-YOOR-ih-nayr-ee) cancers. These include bladder, kidney, testicular, and penile cancer. Some of these can only affect men, as they are cancers of the male reproductive system, but men are also more likely than women to develop kidney and bladder cancer. Other risk factors include age and smoking cigarettes.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation recommends that men begin regular screenings at the age of 50, or sooner if they have other risk factors.
Some common signs of these cancers include blood in the urine and pain in the abdomen or genitals. However, anything out of the ordinary in terms of urination habits, sexual activity, or appearance should be reported to your doctor.
