What are head and neck cancers?
Although brain cancer is technically in the head, we consider it as a separate category in order to provide more focused and expert treatment. Head and neck cancers include all other cancers of the head and neck area, including laryngeal (luh-RIN-jee-ul), lip/oral, oropharyngeal (OR-oh-fuh-RIN-jee-ul), parathyroid (PAYR-uh-THY-royd) and thyroid (THY-royd) cancer. We also treat non-cancerous or cancerous tumors of the throat, nose, sinuses, and skull base, as well as acoustic neuroma, a tumor affecting the inner ear.
Symptoms for these types of cancers can vary depending on the location, especially in the case of skull base tumors. It is known that abusing tobacco and alcohol can increase the risk of certain head and neck cancers. Exposure to radiation can also increase the likelihood of thyroid cancer and salivary gland cancer.
