For the seventh year in a row, Phelps Hospital has received the Get With the Guidelines-Stroke “Gold Plus” Achievement Award. This year in addition to the Gold Plus designation, Phelps has also achieved the additional recognition of Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll. This means that Phelps has been recognized for implementing specific quality improvement measures as well as having met quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. All of these guidelines are outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients.
Get With the Guidelines-Stroke (GWTG) helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based treatments with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Phelps earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include the aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies.
“Phelps is dedicated to improving the quality of stroke care, and Get With the Guidelines helps us achieve that goal,” said Elaine Gardner, BSN, RN, CCRN, Stroke Coordinator. “With this award, our hospital demonstrates our commitment to ensure that our patients receive care based on internationally-respected clinical guidelines.”
“The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognize Phelps for its commitment to stroke care,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program.”
