Student Volunteers

Bringing a world of opportunity to our community students

Welcome to the Student Volunteer page. Phelps Hospital is a wonderful place to fulfill your Community Service while learning about many of the career opportunities available within a health care environment. We invite you to become part of the Phelps Student Volunteer team.

PHELPS Volunteer Services

At Phelps, student volunteers, age 14 to 17, play an important role in making the Hospital a more friendly and efficient place for patients, staff, and visitors. Year-round, more than 60 student volunteers serve in a variety of areas, both patient- and non-patient-related.

Thinking about medical school? Thinking about a career in health care? Nursing? PT/OT?

As a student volunteer, you will be able to observe and interact with professionals in various services. We will write a personal letter of recommendation with an explanation of the service area in which you worked and provide a certificate showing the number of volunteer hours you have given to Phelps.

Why become a PHELPS student volunteer?

  • You will realize great satisfaction from helping patients.
  • You can add your service to your resume when applying to college or for a job.
  • You will be exposed to a variety of careers in the healthcare field.
  • You will meet peers from your own school and other high schools.

Additional benefits include:

  • Free uniform shirt
  • Free snacks
  • Free parking
  • Certificate and personal letter of recommendation upon completion of service
  • Appreciation gift

Requirements

  • At least 14 years of age
  • Working papers (for those under 16)
  • Medical clearance
  • Application and personal interview
  • Commitment of time during both the school year and summer vacation period

Phelps accepts student volunteers without regard to age (if over 14 years), race, color, religion, national origin, sex or disability.

Once you have been accepted as a student volunteer, you will attend an orientation session to learn more about the hospital and will undergo training in your service area. While performing services within the hospital, you will be required to wear an identification badge and uniform, consisting of a supplied white polo shirt, khaki or white pants and white shoes or sneakers.
