Phelps Sleep Center Gets Full Accreditation from American Academy of Sleep Medicine
The Sleep Center at Phelps Memorial Hospital was recently fully accredited as a sleep center by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. To be accredited, a sleep medicine provider must demonstrate compliance in areas such as patient safety and follow-up, testing procedures and policies, physician and staff training, and facility and equipment.
"Our goal is to help people get a good night's sleep, which is key to proper development in children and contributes to overall health throughout life," says Dr. Gary Lehrman, a pulmonologist and medical director of the Sleep Center at Phelps. "We are delighted that our efforts have been given national recognition by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine."
The Sleep Center, which was established at Phelps in 1997, performs approximately 100 sleep studies a month. The Center features six bedrooms with cable TV and private bathrooms. While patients stay overnight in the hospital, their sleep patterns are recorded, including activities of the heart, lungs, brain, muscle movements, air flow and oxygen levels in the blood. Using advanced diagnostic technology, Phelps' staff can determine if an individual is experiencing sleep apnea or another less common sleep disorder and offer appropriate treatment options.
"The multi-disciplinary group of physicians we have on staff at the Phelps
Sleep Center enhances our ability to diagnose and treat sleep disorders in adults
and children," says Dr. Lehrman.
Phelps physicians who are members of the Sleep Center's medical staff are neurologist
Kenneth Schwartz, MD, and pulmonologist Charles Abate, MD, both of whom were
recently board certified in sleep medicine. Dr. Lehrman has been board certified
in sleep medicine since 2007, and surgical director Michael Bergstein, MD, is
board certified in otolaryngology.
In 2008 Phelps expanded its ability to diagnose sleep disorders in children with the addition of specialized diagnostic services provided by Dr. Nadav Traeger, a pediatric pulmonologist who is board certified in pediatric sleep medicine.
