Phelps Enters Affiliation with NY Medical College
Phelps Becomes Clinical Campus for Medical Students
Phelps Memorial Hospital Center and New York Medical College have announced
an affiliation agreement under which medical students are now receiving clinical
training at the Sleepy Hollow community hospital. The agreement covers undergraduate
medical education in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, primary care and
clinical skills, and graduate medical education in pediatrics and obstetrics
and gynecology.
"Phelps is extremely pleased to have entered into this affiliation with New
York Medical College, which enables us to serve as clinical training ground
for future physicians," says Keith Safian, Phelps president and CEO.
An announcement by New York Medical College states, "The affiliation recognizes
that medical education and medical care are interdependent and aims to advance
medical science, education, research and patient care."
Fifteen Phelps physicians from the Departments of Internal Medicine and Family
Medicine are participating in the teaching program for the college's Clinical
Skills course, where second-year medical students learn how to interview and
examine patients. For nine weeks, students spend time at Phelps Hospital or
at a physician's office one afternoon a week to learn these important skills.
The physicians observe the students, offer feedback, and help them get a sense
what it is like to be a practicing physician.
"A community hospital is the perfect setting for medical students to learn these
basic skills," says Lawrence Faltz, MD, Phelps' Senior Vice-President for Medical
Affairs and Chief Medical Officer, who is one of the physicians participating
in the teaching program. Faltz has been mentoring students throughout his entire
career and finds it very satisfying to help start them on the road to becoming
well-rounded physicians. "We teach them how to take a comprehensive, structured
medical history and to do a thorough physical exam. Learning these skills makes
their other experiences more meaningful, and ultimately this helps them become
real professionals."
In addition to Dr. Faltz, the participating Phelps physicians are: Tobe Banc, MD; Ronald Chodosh, MD; Frank Foto, MD; Elio Ippolito, MD; Brian Israel, DO; Madhavi Kancharla, MD; Satish Kapoor, MD; Steven Kopf, MD; Kenneth Kaplan, MD; Michael McCormick, MD; Saleem Mir, MD; Hashmat Rajput, MD; Rafael Soltren, MD; and Theresa Suarez, MD.
