Phelps Receives $250,000 Grant from Entergy

Entergy Grant to Phelps December 20, 2006

For Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, the $250,000 grant from Entergy Nuclear Northeast for the construction of the hospital's new Emergency Department is the crowning glory of an exciting Capital Campaign. With Entergy's grant, Phelps' Campaign meets the challenge set by The Kresge Foundation.

The Entergy grant comes one year after The Kresge Foundation presented Phelps with a "challenge grant" of $800,000. This grant required that Phelps achieve a specific level of community support for its Capital Campaign. Upon achieving that level of support, the Kresge funds would be released. "Entergy's very generous gift has enabled Phelps to meet Kresge's challenge," states Keith F. Safian, Phelps President & CEO, "so we are not only grateful for Entergy's support but also the perfect timing of their gift." Entergy's gift brings the Capital Campaign to a total of nearly $14.8 million. The grant is to be distributed in two equal installments in 2007 and 2008.

In his letter advising Phelps that the grant had been awarded, Michael R. Kansler, President of Entergy Nuclear Northeast stated: "Entergy Nuclear Northeast is proud to be associated with the Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, and we look forward to the successful completion of your new Emergency Department."

"The grant award to Phelps" said Kansler, "reflects Entergy's ongoing commitment to enhance the quality of life in the communities in which we live and work." Entergy Nuclear Northeast, the owner and operator of the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, has actively worked with Phelps and supported joint radiation decontamination training and drills annually. Phelps has participated in decontamination training and conducted drills with Indian Point for over 20 years. "Working with Entergy ensures that Phelps is fully prepared for a broad range of contamination emergencies, including biologic agents and chemicals" said Safian, "and our entire community benefits from this forward-thinking planning."

At 18,000 square feet, Phelps' new Emergency Department will be nearly three times larger than the present department. It will have 30 private rooms, with emphasis on patients' physical and emotional comfort and will feature state-of-the-art medical technology. Patients will be brought directly to their room for triage and treatment without spending any time in a waiting room.

For patients who require decontamination and need medical treatment, the new Emergency Department will have a dedicated decontamination unit with its own ventilation system to prevent cross contamination. Patients who require decontamination but do not need medical treatment will be directed to Phelps' permanent, free-standing Decontamination Facility, the first and only such facility in Westchester.

Phelps Memorial Hospital is a 235-bed community hospital with 400 medical staff representing 50 clinical specialties. Phelps is the Westchester satellite for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; a clinical affiliate of Mount Sinai Hospital; and a member of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System.
