Kathryn W. Davis Bestows $1 Million to Hospital; Dr. Davis Celebrates 100th Birthday!

Kathryn W. Davis $1 million Gift February 23, 2007 - Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is pleased to announce a pledge of one million dollars for the Hospital's new Emergency Department from Kathryn W. Davis, PhD.

"It is a true privilege to receive this extraordinary gift from someone of Dr. Davis's stature," states C. Edward Midgley, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phelps Memorial Hospital, "and we are delighted to be able to name the Kathryn W. Davis Therapeutic Pool and Aquatherapy Center in her honor." The Aquatherapy Center will be located in the 100,000-square-foot Medical Services Building currently under construction at Phelps.

Dr. Davis, philanthropist and civic leader, has devoted many of her 99 years to improving American understanding of world culture and politics. Recently, she was presented with the Woodrow Wilson Award for Distinguished Public Service along with the EastWest Institute Peace and Conflict Prevention Prize in recognition of a lifetime of devotion to making the world a safer place.

Phelps, along with the Villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, has proclaimed this Sunday, February 25th, 2007 - Dr. Davis' 100th birthday - as Kathryn W. Davis Day. Joining Mayor Philip Zegarelli of Sleepy Hollow and Mayor Drew Fixell of Tarrytown in issuing proclamations in honor of Dr. Davis were New York State Assemblyman Richard Brodsky and newly-elected State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Senator Hillary Clinton and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef added their own letters of congratulations to share with Dr. Davis during one of her many birthday celebrations taking place around the world throughout the year.

Dr. Davis has been a major supporter of arts, education, genetic science, environmental conservation, and global peace initiatives. She and her husband, the late Shelby Cullom Davis, established The Shelby Cullom Davis Foundation following Soviet development of nuclear capabilities in hopes that greater communication would lessen the likelihood of war.

"We are deeply grateful for the exceptional support Dr. Davis has demonstrated by making such a generous gift to the hospital," says Bard Bunaes, Vice Chairman of Phelps' Board of Directors and Chairman of Phelps' Capital Campaign Cabinet. "With her donation the Phelps Capital Campaign has raised an unprecedented $16 million."
