Phelps Memorial Hospitals Thoracic Center offers advanced and minimally invasive chest surgery. The Thoracic Center specializes in conventional and thoracoscopic surgery for malignant and benign diseases affecting organs inside the chest cavity except the heart. These include the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, pleura, pericardium, diaphragm, and chest wall.
The Thoracic Center is a multidisciplinary service in which the thoracic surgeon
works with internists, family medicine specialists, cardiologists, pulmonologists,
oncologists and radiologists to provide prompt diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.
Patients benefit from the full-time pressence of the Thoracic Center's director, Avraham. D. Merav, MD. Evaluation of referred patients often begins on the same day and no later than 48 hours after a referral is made. Diagnostic evaluation proceeds with speed and is often completed within a few days. Patients don't need need to wait for weeks for an appointment and don't have to travel between hospitals for diagnosis and treatment. Patients well into their 90s are among those who have benefited from the surgical expertise of the Center.
Avraham D. Merav, MD
The medical director of the Thoracic Center, Avraham D. Merav, MD, is a renowned expert in the fields of thoracic and cardiac surgery. Dr. Merav has performed more than 4,500 open heart and more than 3,500 thoracic operations. He did pioneering work on lung transplantation while at Montefiore Medical Center, where he was chief of thoracic surgery.The Thoracic Center was established last year when Dr. Merav decided to focus his practice of thoracic surgery at Phelps. Previously, he was on staff at Montefiore Medical Center and Englewood Hospital where he was chief of thoracic surgery from 1988 - 2000.
Dr. Merav earned his medical degree at the University of Basle and completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center. He is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery and is an associate clinical professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Merav speaks six languages: Hebrew, French, German, Hungarian, Yiddish and English.
