Overview

Lymphedema is a build-up of lymphatic fluid in tissues under the skin causing swelling and potential dysfunction of any body part. Lymphedema has been found to respond to treatment by a physical or occupational therapist.

Causes

Some causes of lymphedema include:

  • Surgeries
  • Radiation and Chemotherapy
  • Repeated and post-operative infections
  • Trauma
  • Congenital conditions
  • Chronic venous insufficiency

Treatments

  • Manual Lymph Drainage (a specialized massage technique)
  • Exercise to increase re-absorption through muscle-pumping
  • Compressive, low stretch bandaging to aid in re-absorption and prevent refilling of the area
  • Education regarding risk factors, prevention strategies, skin care, and long-term compression garment purchase and use
