Radiation therapy is an integral part of cancer care. With our advanced treatment options, you can stay close to home with the support of family and friends when you need them most.
As part of Northwell Health Department of Radiation Medicine, we follow the philosophy of Smarter Radiation Oncology. In order to ensure your safety and satisfaction, our team compares each patient’s care to the latest proven studies and methods, conducts proactive peer review on each new patient’s plan and completes a checklist prior to beginning a patient’s treatment. We have been nationally recognized for developing and following this safety protocol for radiation therapy.
Our radiation therapy services include:
- Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS):
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a nonsurgical form of radiation therapy that delivers high doses of radiation while sparing nearby tissues and organs. Stereotactic radiosurgery is used to treat brain and spinal tumors.
- Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT):
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a specialized type of external beam radiation therapy that is used to treat a number of cancers including bladder cancer, head and neck cancers, kidney cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer and pancreatic cancer.
- Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT):
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) uses X-ray, cone-beam CT scanning, electromagnetic tracking, optical surface tracking, or ultrasound imaging during treatments to locate and focus radiation beams precisely at the tumors. IGRT is used to treat cancerous and noncancerous tumors and is ideal to treat tumors located very close to sensitive structures and organs.
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT):
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) modifies the intensity of the radiation within each radiation beam and allows delivery of higher doses of radiation to tumors, especially those near vital areas, while lowering doses to nearby healthy tissue.
Our leading edge technology
Our radiation therapy technology is called TrueBeam™. The TrueBeam system delivers radiation using the most advanced and latest technologies available. The delivery system allows the most precise and accurate delivery of radiation therapy, which decreases the treatment time needed to deliver the radiation. TrueBeam rotates around you to deliver the prescribed radiation dose from nearly every angle.
By combining image guidance and beam delivery, the system can accurately and precisely target tumors. The system has real-time imaging tools that allow for visualization of the tumor. Imaging also provides a view into how the tumor moves along with the patient’s breathing patterns. By having this information, our radiation therapy team can synchronize the treatment delivery with your breathing.
Our radiation oncologist uses TrueBeam technology to provide you with the treatment suited for your specific cancer and individual needs, including stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiation therapy, image-guided radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy.
