Counseling - Outpatient

Counseling Services
Phelps Counseling Services are certified by the New York State Office of Mental Health to provide group and individual therapy services to children, adolescents, young adults, adults and families.

Each unit is open Monday through Friday, with evening hours available.

The counseling services provide assessment and treatment by board certified psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and certified social workers.

Treatment includes: group, individual, couple and family counseling; medication management; crisis intervention; case management; support for social issues such as divorce, illness and career changes.

Alcohol/Chemical Dependency - Outpatient

All Phelps Chemical Dependency Services are certified by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

Addiction Treatment Services (ATS) – Ossining:
Phelps Addiction Treatment Services provides care for adolescents and adults who require substance abuse treatment and counseling. ATS is a full-service outpatient service providing day rehabilitation programs and psycho-educational clinic programs that include: psychiatric evaluation, medication management, individual and group therapy, co-dependency groups, vocational assessments and referral, and a DWI clinic. Relapse prevention is a central theme throughout the programs. All programs are designed to treat both the alcoholic and the dually diagnosed patient and are based on the 12-step philosophy.

Threshold – Tarrytown:
Phelps Threshold provides an array of outpatient chemical dependency services for adolescents and adults, as well as their significant others. The professional staff of Threshold assesses client needs through a comprehensive evaluation and provides individual and group counseling. Our bilingual staff offers services in both English and Spanish.

Adolescent Services – Outpatient:
Phelps offers alcohol and substance abuse programs for adolescents 16 years of age and older. Treatment includes: group and individual therapy, educational and preventive groups, and group sessions that focus on relapse prevention and the maintenance of an alcohol-free and drug-free lifestyle.

Family members are offered educational programs, support groups, and their own 12-step meeting referrals.

Our multi-disciplinary teams for adolescent services include: psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, art and recreational therapists, and credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselors.

Continuing Day Treatment - Outpatient

The Continuing Day Treatment (CDT) program provides mental health services for individuals over 18 years of age who require more intensive treatment than a clinic setting can provide to treat serious mental illness, whether long-term or of sudden onset.

The program is structured to provide services for clients with varying levels of need. Services include symptom management, medication management, health education, social skill development, vocational guidance, case management and discharge planning.

Intensive/Supportive Case Management - Outpatient

CM/SCM is designed to coordinate services and supports for people diagnosed with mental illness to enable them to live successfully in the community. Highly trained intensive and supportive case managers provide services individually tailored to circumstances, needs and desires of each individual. A rehabilitation-oriented case management approach is used to achieve the ultimate goal of increasing the person’s level of functioning in the roles and environments (living, learning, working and socialization) they choose.

The ICM/SCM program employs a team approach. Four principals are incorporated to make the community available for individuals:

• Engage the individual by providing options that are responsive to his or her needs and preferences.
• Reduce inpatient treatment by providing services and support that prevent or resolve crises in the person’s own place of residence.
• Help people develop hope for possibility of recovery.
• Assist people in developing and achieving personally satisfying goals in the areas of housing, social relationships, education and work.

Inpatient Psychiatry

The Inpatient Psychiatric Unit is a 22-bed, acute, general psychiatric unit for adult and geriatric patients. Treatment is individualized, goal-centered, and provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The multi-disciplinary team consists of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists.

The protocols stress active patient involvement with emphasis on thorough and continuous assessment, stabilization, symptom management, and the development of comprehensive coping skills.

A special program for geriatric patients is designed and staffed to treat the physical and developmental challenges associated with aging.

Electroconvulsive therapy is available.

Substance Abuse Rehabilitation - Inpatient

The Behavioral Rehabilitation Unit is a 42-bed Dual Recovery Service that treats adult patients from the age of 19 years. Stabilization, psycho-education, and medical management are three primary components of the program. Individualized, goal-centered treatment is provided by an interdisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychiatric nurses, social workers, certified alcoholism counselors, and activities therapists on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis.

Patients are assisted with their return to a lesser level of care to their community, home, and family.
