Overview

The Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program, accredited in 2011, is the first family medicine residency program to be established in New York State since 1995, and is actively addressing the growing need for primary care physicians in the U.S., particularly in New York State. The program is a collaboration between four major health institutions: Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and Open Door Family Medical Centers.

The residency is based at Phelps Hospital where more than 100 Phelps physicians have volunteered to teach residents during their three years of training. Residents also see patients at Open Door Family Medical Centers, a Federally Qualified Health Center that is a leader in providing care under the patient-centered medical home model. Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine is the sponsoring academic institution for the residency program.

The program celebrated the graduation of its first class of residents in spring, 2015 and has proudly welcomed three graduates to the residency faculty team while two graduates are are now practicing with Phelps and two more are practicing in Open Door locations. Other graduates have pursued fellowships and practice with hospitals and medical centers around the country. Two-thirds of the residency program’s graduates now provide care for patients in underserved communities.
