Phelps Acquires Latest Technology for Minimally Invasive Surgery
(January 25, 2017) Phelps Hospital has acquired the most advanced method of minimally invasive robotic surgery, the da Vinci Xi Surgical System, for its state-of-the-art SurgiCenter. Manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci Xi can be used during minimally invasive gynecological, urological, thoracic, cardiac and general surgical procedures.
During robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon sits at a console and uses hand controls to maneuver robotic arms while viewing images of the inside of the patient’s body that are displayed on a high-definition, 3-D screen. The robotic arms have tiny instruments, including an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera), attached to the ends of them. The instruments, which have joints and can bend in multiple directions, have the ability to cut, cauterize (burn or sear skin or flesh to stop bleeding) and grasp. At all times, the surgeon is totally in control of the robotic-assisted system, which translates his/her hand movements into small, precise movements of the tiny instruments.
Key features of the newest da Vinci surgical system include an overhead instrument design for the robotic arms, which facilitates anatomical access; a more compact endoscope that provides improved vision and clarity; the ability to attach the endoscope to any of the robotic arms, improving visualization of the surgical site; and smaller, thinner robotic arms with newly designed joints, offering greater range of motion.
Darren Rohan, MD, FACS, regional director of the Northwell Health Physician Partners thoracic surgery program for Westchester, is heading up the robotic-assisted thoracic surgery team at Phelps. Dr. Rohan, a thoracic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery, has been performing this type of surgery for four years.
“Surgeons trained on the robot can do more complex operations minimally invasively,” says Dr. Rohan. “And with this new da Vinci system, even more patients can be treated minimally invasively because the high-definition visualization is better, the instruments are smaller and it’s easier to move them around.” The daVinci Xi is expandable technology, designed to accommodate future innovations in imaging and advanced instruments.
