Phelps Hospital Hosts “Celebration of Life” for Lung Cancer Survivors
(December 5, 2016) In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, on November 16 a group of lung cancer survivors who had been treated at Phelps Hospital gathered recently with family, friends, physicians and other healthcare providers for a “Celebration of Life.” The survivors were invited to this special occasion, held on the hospital campus at the James House, by Dr. Avraham Merav, their thoracic surgeon and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Phelps. The atmosphere was joyful as the survivors shared their stories with fellow survivors and reconnected with those who were responsible for their recovery.
After a presentation by Dr. Merav, several of the survivors spoke to the entire group. All of them said they chose Phelps because they asked around and searched the Internet, and discovered that they would be cared for at Phelps by a renowned thoracic surgeon. Their presentations revealed a similar experience: when they met Dr. Merav, they felt they were going to be all right. Rather than dwelling on their ordeals, all of the survivors expressed gratitude for a newfound appreciation for life.
Daniel Blum, Phelps President & CEO, addressed the group saying, “We at Phelps want to acknowledge your difficult journeys, as well as the work of our fine physicians, such as Dr. Merav, and other clinicians for the excellent care they provide. I am excited to say that many of the oncologists who have joined the Phelps medical staff recently have come as a result of the hospital’s affiliation with Northwell Health. These oncologists are developing the Northwell Cancer Institute at Phelps Hospital, which will open next year, ensuring that our community will continue to have access to the best in cancer care.”
Under the direction of Dr. Merav, the Westchester Lung Nodule Center was established at Phelps in 2012 to promote the detection of lung cancer at an early stage when it is most curable. As widely recommended, people at high risk of developing lung cancer are screened with low-dose CT scans, which have been shown to detect cancer and save lives to a greater degree than chest X-rays. Phelps also offers support and treatment for smokers who are trying to quit, with the goal of preventing lung cancer from occurring in the first place.
Phelps is accredited as a Community Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. For more information on lung cancer screening and smoking cessation support at Phelps visit www.lungnodulecenter.org or call 914-366-2333.
