Students aged 14 to 17 play an important role in making Phelps a friendly and efficient place for patients, staff, and visitors. Year-round, more than 60 student volunteers serve in a variety of areas. Whether it’s to fulfill your Community Service or maybe you’re thinking about medical school or a career in health care, our student volunteer program provides the opportunity to observe and interact with professionals in various services.

What are the student volunteer requirements?
- At least 14 years of age
- Working papers (for those under 16)
- Medical clearance
- Time commitment during school year and summer vacation

Once accepted as a student volunteer, you’ll attend hospital orientation and undergo training in your service area. Upon completion, we’ll write a personal letter of recommendation with a description of the service area in which you worked and also provide a certificate of completed service with the number of volunteer hours you have given to Phelps.

Established in 1955, Phelps Auxiliary is a network of hundreds of men and women who provide volunteer services and participate in fundraising activities to help support the hospital. The Auxiliary is a volunteer membership organization comprised of nearly 400 dedicated individuals. Its primary mission is to raise much needed funds for the hospital.
Since its inception, the Auxiliary has raised $4 million in pledges and cash, including $54,200 for Phelps Hospice, $500,000 for Mammography, and a $500,000 Capital Campaign pledge for the new Emergency Department. Their support has also helped finance renovation of the mental health facility, purchase of operating room equipment, development of the Emergency Department’s PromptCare facility, and other capital improvements. The Cherry Door Thrift Shop is located at 36 Main Street in Tarrytown, the Auxiliary’s thrift shop is an ideal place to browse for everything from books to bureaus, plates to pictures, sporting goods to sofas, jewelry to jazz records and much more. Staffed by volunteers, The Cherry Door is a great place to pick up bargains and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Donations of used items in good condition are welcome (household items only, no clothing). Call (914) 631-0470 for information. The Cherry Door may need what you don’t want.

Located off the main lobby, the Phelps Gift Shop is the place to shop for that special gift. A fundraising project of the Hospital Auxiliary, the shop is open seven days a week, staffed by volunteers.
Among its treasures are attractive and well-priced gifts for all occasions, including decorative pillows; ceramic, glass or crystal figurines; picture frames, trays, trivets and cutting boards; Stone Mountain hand bags; wallets, umbrellas and ladies’ scarves; fashion jewelry; beautiful baby clothing, accessories and plush animals; inspirational gifts; greeting cards; sweets; and a variety of personal items.
